A Successful Formula
Heather Purucker Bretzlaff Has Built a Successful
Career Around a Commitment to Quality, Education
and Customer Service
By Karen Henry
Success has come quickly for Heather Purucker Bretzlaff. In just five short years, she has risen through ranks at Purucker & Marrano and now serves as the company’s Vice President. During her tenure, the company has enjoyed steady growth and a handful of industry awards. While Purucker says such accolades are certainly an honor, she says one of her primary measures of success has a more personal angle. “If my customers are referring others, then I know we’re doing the right thing,” she says. Given the company’s growth since she joined Purucker & Marrano in 1997, it’s clear she is doing just that — the right thing.
Purucker & Marrano has been building custom homes in southeast Florida since 1984. Since joining the company, Bretzlaff has helped the company grow from building around 15 custom homes to between 25-30 custom homes annually.
The company now employs 15 people and has a solid footing in the high-end luxury market. Purucker & Marrano has built nearly 500 homes in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties, primarily in country club developments and waterfront communities.
As Vice President, Bretzlaff shares responsibility for running the company with her father, Gary Purucker, President and founder of Purucker & Marrano. While she oversees all areas of the business from time to time, her focus is in sales and marketing. Her business approach is grounded on two primary philosophies: education and service. Bretzlaff believes that in order to be successful in any industry, you need to do more than be an expert in your area — you need to be educated about all aspects of the industry. Bretzlaff has developed this knowledge by holding a variety of positions in the housing industry. She started her career in real estate and then worked for a large leasing corporation. Later, she worked as a sales representative for several builders.
Armed with sales, marketing and management experience, she joined Purucker & Marrano, where she first focused on sales. She gradually progressed into other areas of the business before being named Vice President in 2002. Bretzlaff holds both a real estate and general contractor’s license and stays on top of industry trends by attending local and national builder shows as well as by talking regularly to her suppliers.
Equally important to Bretzlaff’s success as well as the success of Purucker & Marrano is her commitment to service and building long-lasting, productive relationships. “I strive to give the best service and value possible, and I always use honesty and integrity with my clients and business partners,” she says. “I think if you work that way, you’ll be successful in the end.”
When Bretzlaff came on board, the company had already built a strong reputation for quality with its customers. One of the things Bretzlaff is most proud of, though, is that she has helped to maintain that reputation within the community and with the company’s clients. “When people hear our name, they know it’s synonymous with quality. I’m proud of the fact that we’re a good company, we put a good product together, and we follow through with our clients. I can’t imagine being in another business.”
